How to Choose the Right A/C System

August ushers in some of the hottest days of the year in Utah. Ensuring your family’s indoor comfort and safety — getting “back to cool” — is top priority this summer. Choosing the right A/C system can dramatically impact how your loved ones combat the heat. At Best Heating & Cooling, we aim to take care of all the residents in the Salt Lake Valley. Learn to determine what best fits your home based on size, type and features.

Size and types of A/C units

Size is one of the overall deciding factors of choosing an air conditioner. Air conditioners are sized by tons: one ton for every 600 square feet. An air conditioner that is too small or too large can prove to be inefficient and costly.

Another factor to consider is what type of air conditioner you require. Different cooling needs require different systems:

  • Central units are commonly used in homes that need complete cooling. The air is pumped from one unit into your home throughout the ductwork. While this is the most expensive up front, it saves money and energy in the long run.
  • Window units are good for cooling single rooms. This unit sits in the window while pumping cool air in and hot air out. This option is more affordable but not as efficient as a central unit.
  • Portable units are a great choice for limited spaces. Being the least expensive of the choices, this unit can be taken from room to room with ease.

Taking a closer look

Not all air conditioners are built the same. This is more notable when inspecting the features of each system. Improved features continue to show up in newer models that are wasteless and aid you in saving money. Some of these include a fan-only option, an auto-delay switch, and a smart thermostat that allows you to control everything from your smartphone. Air conditioners are also given a SEER, which is a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating. A rating between 15 and 17 is considered very efficient.
